HL Deb 31 July 1953 vol 183 c1240WA
LORD BROUGHSHANE

asked Her Majesty's Government whether it is their intention to alter the present anomalous situation in which widows and widowers are entitled to claim a special income tax allowance when, for reasons of ill-health or old age, it is necessary to employ a housekeeper, while divorced, separated or single persons in similar circumstances are denied a similar benefit.

THE EARL OF SELKIRK

The Royal Commission on the Taxation of Profits and Income are at present engaged on a review of the Income Tax system, in the course of which the personal allowances and reliefs will be examined. Her Majesty's Government think it desirable to await the Commission's Report before considering any change in the conditions on which an Income Tax allowance can be claimed for a housekeeper.

House adjourned at four minutes before twelve o'clock noon, until Tuesday, 20th October, 1953.
