HL Deb 19 June 1951 vol 172 c194WA
LORD CALVERLEY

asked His Majesty's Government what is the status of His Britannic Majesty's representative in Pekin; whether he has freedom of movement and enjoys the usual courtesies and privileges granted to diplomatic personages.

THE PARLIAMENTARY UNDER-SECRETARY OF STATE FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS (LORD HENDERSON)

The Chinese Government accept His Majesty's Chargé d'Affaires in that capacity to discuss preliminary and procedural matters on the establishment of diplomatic relations. Like all foreign residents in Pekin, he is free to move within a radius of about ten miles from the city wall without restriction and without special permission, but special arrangements with the authorities would have to be made for any movement outside that area. He is accorded the usual diplomatic courtesies arid privileges of his position.

House adjourned at twenty-four minutes before seven o'clock.
