HC Deb 04 December 1950 vol 482 c7W
72. Mr. Profumo

asked the Minister of Transport what were the factors which influenced him to reject the application by the Stratford-on-Avon Borough Council to extend the 30 miles per hour speed limit area on the Alcester Road to cover the stretch between Church Lane and Albany Road.

Mr. Barnes

There is only ribbon development on the north side of this stretch of road for about two-thirds of its length. On the south side, apart from a school, there is no development. It is not my policy to impose a speed limit to meet conditions which occur only at limited periods during week-days, and the best way to protect children crossing roads of this character is to provide an adult patrol. There is no suggestion that speed was a contributory factor in the comparatively few accidents which have occurred on this length of road during the past three years.
