HC Deb 04 February 1948 vol 446 c279W
Mr. Bartlett

asked the Minister of Food why the extra ration of twelve ounces of cheese issued during weeks 1 to 24 to bricklayers working at a distance from canteens or from their homes is now no longer available; why no advance announcement of the cut was made and whether some alternative extra ration, such as tea and sugar, will be issued in its place.

Mr. Strachey

The special cheese ration is still available for those who qualify for it. There has been no change. Workers employed in the building trades, in common with other workers receiving the special cheese ration, were required to reapply for the extra ration at the end of ration week No. 24. The usual publicity was given to this matter in the Press. Workers in the building trades were told to apply through their employers. Tea and sugar cannot be allowed as extra rations in lieu of the special cheese ration, but if the workers concerned have no canteen facilities their employers can obtain tea, sugar and milk for the preparation of hot drinks to be consumed during working hours.
