HC Deb 05 November 1946 vol 428 cc223-4W
117. Mr. Callaghan

asked the Secretary of State for War if he is satisfied that the equipment at the disposal of the Australian authorities responsible for B.C.O.F. in Japan is sufficient to permit British troops to be decently housed and supplied; and what assistance has been requested by the Australian Government, or has been offered to them.

Mr. Bellenger

Yes, Sir, I am satisfied that the Australian authorities are able to discharge their responsibilities towards the British troops in Japan. It must be appreciated, however, that the allocation of housing and building materials in Japan is not the responsibility of the Australian Government. I would refer my hon. Friend to the reply given on 22nd October to my hon. and gallant Friend the Member for Spen Valley (Lieut.-Colonel Sharp).

With regard to the second part of the Question, I will send my hon. Friend the information in writing since it will take a little time to collect.
