asked the Minister of Health how many men and women, respectively, over the age of 65 are in employment in the United Kingdom and in Scotland, respectively, at the last available date, and at the corresponding date a year ago?

No precise figures are available, but the approximate number of employed persons aged 65 and upwards, as shown by the receipt of contribution cards bearing one or more contributions for the half-year ended 1st January, 1939, was as follows:

Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Scotland.
Men 317,000 35,000
Women 67,900 6,500
Totals 384,900 41,500

The corresponding figures for the half-year ended 2nd January, 1938 were:
