HC Deb 21 March 1938 vol 333 c859W
Captain Plugge

asked the Home Secretary what is the total number of Austrians now in Great Britain; and whether, in view of recent developments, leniency will be exercised in the case of those whose permits to stay in this country have expired and who do not wish to return to Austria for the time being?

Sir S. Hoare

The number of Austrians over 16 years of age registered with the police is approximately 14,000, of whom about 11,500 are women. The majority of the women have been admitted under Ministry of Labour permits for domestic service. The answer to the last part of the question is in the affirmative.
