HC Deb 16 November 1937 vol 329 cc223-4W
Mr. McGovern

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he can state

ing of prison-service candidates at the Wakefield Imperial Training College in addition to the 12 months' probation in the Scottish prison service; that only half of the period spent at Wakefield is permitted to count for pension; and whether he will arrange for the full period of service to count?

Mr. Elliot

Candidates undergo a course of nine weeks' training at the Imperial Training School for Prison Officers, followed by four weeks at a Scottish Prison; and if found satisfactory they are certificated by the Civil Service Commissioners, at the end of the period of training, for appointment as Warder. The initial period of three months' training counts as to one-half for pension. This rule is in accordance with the Civil Service practice and with Section 3 (1) of the Superannuation Act, 1935. No alteration appears to be justified.
