HC Deb 29 January 1937 vol 319 cc1199-200W
Mr. R. Gibson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many equipped holdings have been provided by the Department of Agriculture within five miles of the boundary of Greenock; whether he is aware that there is a demand for holdings on the part of men in Greenock at present unemployed; that there is in Greenock a considerable market for the products of such holdings; and whether he will take steps to make such holdings available within that area?

Mr. Elliot

No equipped holdings have been provided by the Department of Agriculture for Scotland within five miles of the boundary of Greenock, the greater part of the land in this area being regarded as unsuitable for the formation of the smaller type of holding. During the past three years over 1,000 acres of land have been acquired by the Department in the county of Renfrew for land settlement purposes and the needs of all suitable applicants in the county are kept in view in allocating new holdings.
