HC Deb 09 February 1937 vol 320 cc241-2W
Mr. Leonard

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he will state the number of maternity homes registered under the 1927 Act in Scotland; the total number of nurses employed in these homes; and of that total the number who have neither the Central Midwives Board qualification nor are registered in the general part of the register of nurses?

Mr. Elliot

I am informed that there are 129 maternity homes registered under the Midwives and Maternity Homes (Scotland) Act, 1927. I have no particulars at present as to the numbers and qualifications of the nursing staffs employed in them, but I am taking steps to obtain information from the local authorities by whom the homes are registered. These authorities have, of course, wide powers under the Act to secure an adequate standard of nursing.
