asked the First Lord of the Admiralty the number of mates (E) promoted to engineer-commander, the number of mates promoted to commander, the number of lieut.-commanders (ex-mate) in the zone for promotion to commander on 31st December, 1934; the reasons why none of these officers were selected; and whether it is intended that

it is not possible to indicate precisely the saving effected. It is estimated, however, that the annual saving, after allowance for the cost of renting, maintenance and materials, is approximately between £5,000 and £6,000 per annum.
