HC Deb 05 February 1931 vol 247 c2133W
Mr. HORE-BELISHA

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty how many apprentices have completed their training since June, 1929; and how many have been discharged on coming out of their time?

Mr. AMMON

The numbers are 567 and 26 respectively. Of the number discharged two were at their own request.

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty how much each apprentice in His Majesty's dockyards costs the State to train?

Mr. AMMON

The average cost of the instruction of apprentices in His Majesty's dockyard schools at home during 1930 was about £20 10s. per head, and the total cost on this basis for an apprentice who receives four years' instruction is, therefore, about £82.
