HC Deb 10 December 1931 vol 260 c2076W
Lord APSLEY

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will give an estimate of the yearly saving to the Exchequer were third-class season railway tickets given to Members of Parliament whose constituencies are under 120 miles from London in lieu of the present vouchers?

Major ELLIOT

There are no recent data for estimating the difference in cost, for constituencies within 120 miles of London, between the system of third-class season tickets and the present arrangement of vouchers available for first or third-class; but on the evidence available it is doubtful if third-class season tickets would be more economical even within this area. In any case it would not be practicable to confine the use of season tickets to particular areas or particular cases, or to third-class travelling, and I am satisfied that the general issue of season tickets would result in a substantial increase in the cost of Members' travelling facilities.
