Mr. SIMON

asked the Minister of Health what is the number of houses completed by the municipality in each of the last five years in Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds, respectively?

The following statement gives the number of houses erected with State assistance by each of these municipalities:

to the Unemployment Grants Committee were approved in 1929. 210 men were employed on 31st October on five state-aided schemes in the area, which are estimated to last for varying periods up to a year.

asked the Minister of Labour the number of persons registered as unemployed in the Woolwich area for the last convenient date in November, and similar information at approximately the same date in 1927, 1928, and 1929?

From 1st April, 1920, to 30th September, 1930, grants as shown have been paid from the Exchequer and the Road Fund towards the cost of works undertaken for the relief of unemployment.

It should be added that:
(1) Information as to the expenditure by the recipients of the grants on the Schemes referred to under (a) is not available; but from 1st April, 1920, to 30th September, 1930 the schemes in respect of which grants from the Exchequer have been sanctioned (and have either been paid or will become payable) are estimated to cost in total nearly £187,000,000.
(2) The expenditure by Local Authorities corresponding to the expenditure detailed under (b) is not precisely ascertainable but is estimated to amount in total to a further £18,000,000.
(3) Expenditure from sources other than the Exchequer in respect of the miscellaneous Schemes referred to under (c) amounted in total to approximately £900,000.
(4) No information is available as to the amount expended by Local Authorities on Schemes for the relief of unemployment which are wholly financed out of rates.
