HC Deb 12 November 1929 vol 231 cc1750-1W
Captain BENNETT

asked the First Commissioner of Works whether, as a means of providing work of national interest and importance, a grant can be made towards an adequate excavation of large sections of the Roman fortified lines commonly known as Hadrian's Wall?

Mr. LANSBURY

The work of excavation to which my hon. and gallant Friend refers has my entire sympathy, hut I regret that I cannot, as at present advised, ask the Government to commit itself to the principle of subsidising the work of archaeological societies. I may add that, so far, no part of the wall has been placed in the charge of my Department.
