HC Deb 02 May 1923 vol 163 cc1408-9W
Mr. NEWBOLD

asked the Under-Secretary to the Scottish Board of Health whether his Department has any information regarding the insanitary property, 297, Herry Street, Cleekhinvin, Motherwell, owned by the Holytown Collieries Company; whether he is aware that the doctor attending Mrs. Daniel Howley, lately deceased, wife of the occupant, has certified her death of rheumatism as being partly due to the damp condition of the house, and has advised Daniel Howley to obtain a new home; and whether he will take any steps to expedite the provision of houses in the burgh and locality of Motherwell?

Captain ELLIOT

I am informed that the property in question belongs to the United Collieries Company and consists of two rooms. The house has been condemned and would be closed against human habitation but for the scarcity of houses in the district. I have no information that the death of the wife of the present tenant was certified as due to rheumatism or that the medical attendant advised the tenant to obtain a new home, but I understand that no application from the tenant for a house has been received by the local authority. As regards the last part of the question, I would refer the hon. Member to the last part of my reply to the question put by him on this point yesterday. I believe that the company in question has also been constructing houses for its employés.
