HC Deb 18 November 1919 vol 121 c383W
EARL WINTERTON

asked the Food Controller if his attention has been called to the fact that losses have been sustained by breeders of South Down sheep under the present grading system of the sale of meat, owing to the fact that pure-bred South Down mutton, where there is an open market, is invariably sold at a higher rate than other mutton of the same weight and age; and whether he proposes to take any action in the matter?

Mr. McCURDY

Owing to the administration difficulties involved, it has been found impossible to fix differential prices for meat according to quality. I am aware that the present arrangement is not in every way satisfactory, but I am afraid that no alteration is practicable so long as the controlled distribution of meat, and guaranteed prices to the farmer are necessary.
