HC Deb 09 May 1919 vol 115 cc1223-4W
Mr. MITCHELL

asked the President of the Local Government Board whether he will explain why in the election of a borough elective auditor only one polling station is allowed, making a representative vote impossible in a large borough; why the difficulty is further increased by the power to give only one vote when two auditors are required; whether he is aware that at the recent Croydon election, involving considerable expense, about 700 votes out of over 70,000 electors were recorded; and whether he will amend the system of voting to make it representative, or abolish the office of elective auditors?

Dr. ADDISON

Under Section 62 of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1882, elections of elective auditors must be held at the town hall or some one other convenient place appointed by the Mayor, and I do not think that I can undertake to propose legislation at the present time for the alteration of the provisions of the Act.
