HC Deb 25 April 1917 vol 92 cc2422-3W
Brigadier-General CROFT

asked the First Commissioner of Works whether his attention has been called to the fact that the Office of Works, in connection with a contract dating from 1st April, called for tenders of certain articles which are manufactured only in enemy countries, notably Jena chimneys; and whether he will give instructions that in future no tenders will be invited for enemy-made goods?

Sir A. MOND

No tenders for articles which are manufactured only in enemy countries have been called for in my Department. The term "Jena" chimneys is a trade term describing a well-known type of fire-resisting glass, whatever may be its country of manufacture. This was fully understood by the successful tenderers who quoted for chimneys of this type, none of which were manufactured in enemy countries. It is, therefore unnecessary for me to give instructions such as are indicated in the hon. Member's question.
