been found to have been wrongfully imprisoned for offences in Great Britain connected with Irish terrorism, stating, in each case, whether he or she was originally arrested under Prevention of Terrorism legislation.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

Since the coming into force of the Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act 1974 on 29 November 1974, the convictions of the following people for offences connected with Northern Irish terrorism have been quashed by the Court of Appeal following a reference under section 17(1) of the Criminal Appeal Act 1968:

Paul Hill Patrick O'Neill
Gerard Conlon Patrick Conlon* (deceased)
Patrick Armstrong Patrick Hill
Carole Richardson Robert Hunter
Anne Maguire* Noel McIlkenny
Patrick Maguire Hugh Callaghan
William Smyth* William Power
Vincent Maguire John Walker
Patrick Joseph Maguire* Judith Ward

Of these the four marked with an asterisk had been detained under the Prevention of Terrorism legislation before being charged with the offences in question but this had no relevance to the quashing of their convictions.

There have been no referrals in such cases to the High Court in Scotland by the Secretary of State for Scotland.

Information on people who have been convicted by the courts of offences connected with Northern Irish terrorism and whose convictions have subsequently been quashed by the Court of Appeal or the High Court in Scotland other than on a reference by the appropriate Secretary of State is not available and could be provided only at disproportionate cost.

Mr. Kaufman
