HL Deb 15 July 1994 vol 556 cc2103-4

2 Clause 49, page 23, line 5, after 'section', insert '— (a)'.

Lord Strathclyde

My Lords, I beg to move that the House do agree with the Commons in their Amendment No. 2. I shall speak also to Amendments Nos. 3 and 7.

These amendments allow persons on the register of trademark agents to use the title "trade mark attorney". They also allow similar provision to be made in the future regarding persons on the list of qualified representatives that will be maintained by the Community Trade Marks Office. That will bring registered trade mark agents into line with patent agents who, for some years, have been able to use the title "patent attorney".

Moved, That the House do agree with the Commons in their Amendment No. 2.—(Lord Strathclyde.)

Lord Peston

My Lords, it is not my intention to intervene at any length on any of these amendments. As noble Lords are aware, I favour the Bill and the amendments very strongly. I particularly wanted to rise to say that these amendments are a distinct improvement and therefore the other place has contributed at least something to the Bill. I warmly support this group of amendments.

Baroness Hamwee

My Lords, with my professional background it would be a little churlish of me not to recognise that the call by the trade marks profession for permission to use the term "trade mark attorney" is an important one. I hope that it will help to consolidate their position on the world stage.

On Question, Motion agreed to.
