HL Deb 24 October 1990 vol 522 c1433

113 Clause 51, page 40, line 32, leave out from 'described)' to end of line 33 and insert 'which prohibits barristers from entering into contracts or restrict their right to do so.'.

The Lord Chancellor

My Lords, I beg to move that the House do agree with the Commons in the Amendment No. 113. This amendment clarifies the extent to which the General Council of the Bar is empowered to formulate rules restricting a barrister's right to enter into contracts for the provision of his services as a barrister.

Moved, That the House do agree with the Commons in their Amendment No. 113.—(The Lord Chancellor.)

Lord Renton

My Lords, I put on record that, from the point of view of the Bar, this is a very necessary and welcome amendment.

The Lord Chancellor

My Lords, I am grateful to my noble friend.

On Question, Motion agreed to.
