HL Deb 19 June 1956 vol 197 cc1046-7

Order of the Day for the Second Reading read.

LORD AMULREE

My Lords, this Bill makes provision for certain changes to the historic hospital of the Earl of Leicester, Warwick, which was founded in the sixteenth century by Queen Elizabeth's friend and favourite. At the present time the administration is in the hands of a retired clergyman, who has not been able to put in a great deal of time. The building needs repair. The Bill before your Lordships changes the administration and puts it in the hands of trustees. At the same time, there are two big rooms in the building not wanted for administration and the Bill makes provision for raising a certain amount of money by renting these two rooms for various purposes in the City of Warwick. Once again, the Bill has been widely publicised in Warwick and as there are no objections, I beg to move that the Bill be read a second time.

Moved, That the Bill be now read 2a.—(Lord Amulree.)

VISCOUNT DE LISLE

My Lords, I have been connected for many years with the Charity to which the noble Lord refers. I have been in contact for some time with the Charity Commissioners, who have been most courteous in consulting me as heir of the original benefactor. I think that this scheme will refound the ancient Charity on sounder modern lines, and it certainly has my support as patron.

On Question, Bill read 2a, and committed to a Committee of the Whole House.
