Order of the Day read for the consideration of the Fourth Report from the Select Committee.

The Committee reported as follows:

1.—HISTORICAL RECORDS

The Report of the Sub-Committee appointed to enquire into the storage and preservation of the Records in the Victoria Tower was laid before the Committee and approved.

2.—REVISED SCALES OF SALARY

The Committee sanctioned the application of Treasury Establishments Circular No. 31/54 (Pay of the Higher Civil Service) to the Officers of the House to whom it may be applied.

The Committee approved a consolidated rate of salary for the combined post of Secretary to the Lord Great Chamberlain and Yeoman Usher of the Black Rod.

The Committee also sanctioned consequential increases in Superannuation awards to two Officers who retired last year.

3.—MEAL ALLOWANCE

The Committee approved an increase in the rate of the meal allowance payable to certain officials working late in the evening after a normal day's duty.

4.—DEPARTMENT OF THE LORD GREAT CHAMBERLAIN.

The Committee was informed of the absence through sick leave of the Office Assistant in the Office of the Lord Great Chamberlain and authorised the temporary appointment of a Shorthand Typist in his place.

The Committee was also informed of the resignation of Miss J. E. M. Everard, Clerical Assistant in the Office of the Lord Great Chamberlain.

5.—CUSTODIANS

The Committee authorised the conditions of service and a new basis for payment of the Custodian staff.

6.—GRATUITY TO LEGAL PERSONAL REPRESENTATIVE OF CUSTODIAN.

The Committee sanctioned the payment of a gratuity under section 39 (1) of the Superannuation Act, 1949, to the legal personal representative of Custodian James French, who died on 1st September, 1954.

7.—RETIREMENT OF A HOUSEMAID

The Committee sanctioned the payment of a gratuity under section 40 of the Superannuation Act, 1949, to Mrs. Doris Sandison who retired on 9th October, 1954, after 13 completed years' service.
