HL Deb 02 May 1951 vol 171 cc617-8
LORD LLEWELLIN

My Lords, on behalf of my noble and learned friend Lord Simon, who is detained in the Privy Council, I beg to ask the Question which stands in his name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask His Majesty's Government whether, in view of the debate in this House on 14th February last on the salaries of County Court Judges, when the view that their present salary is inadequate was supported from all quarters of the House and the Resolution was adopted, with the approval of the Leader of the House, that the Government should give earnest consideration to this question, they can now give any information as to further consideration being given by the Government to the matter and as to the prospects of an early announcement of the Government's proposals in reference thereto.]

THE LORD CHANCELLOR (VIS- COUNT JOWITT)

My Lords, this matter has been receiving consideration in accordance with the Resolution which the noble Viscount the Leader of the House accepted in February. Much progress has been made, and I can assure the noble and learned Viscount that the consideration will be completed without any avoidable delay. I hope that it will be possible to make an announcement as to the intentions of His Majesty's Government in the matter before very long.
