HL Deb 13 June 1945 vol 136 c575

2.33 p.m.

EARL GREYmoved to resolve, That in accordance with the Church of England Assembly (Powers) Act, 1919, this House do direct that the Episcopal Pensions Measure, 1945, be presented to His Majesty for the Royal Assent.

The noble Earl said: My Lords, in 1926 a Church Assembly Measure establishing a scheme of pensions for Bishops was accepted by Parliament. This Measure varies that measure slightly and extends the scheme to cover Suffragan Bishops. It is expected that when the new scheme is in running order the total charges falling upon general Church funds for episcopal pensions will not exceed, if it reaches, the present sum allotted for that purpose. I think that that is an indication that the ground covered by this Measure is not very extensive. It was never challenged to a division at any stage in the Church Assembly. I shall be very glad to answer any questions if any noble Lord wishes for further details. I beg to move.

Moved, to resolve That in accordance with the Church of England Assembly (Powers) Act, 1919, this House do direct that the Episcopal Pensions Measure, 1945, be presented to His Majesty for the Royal Assent.—(Earl Grey).

On Question, Motion agreed to.
