HL Deb 06 June 1945 vol 136 cc444-5

4.17 p.m.

LORD FARINGDON

My Lords, I beg to ask the first question in my name.

[The question was as follows:

To ask His Majesty's Government, whether it is a fact that Ebert, who was Chief of Police in Athens under the Germans, still holds the same post.]

THE MARQUESS OF NORMANBY

My Lords, I have been asked to reply to this question. The answer is, Yes. Ebert is still head of the Athens Police. During the German occupation he worked closely with British secret organizations and rendered us outstanding service.

LORD FARINGDON

Have His Majesty's Government any reason to suppose that the Germans were dissatisfied with his behaviour as Chief of Police and, if they had no such reason, is it not perhaps possible that his co-operation was a form of insurance policy?

THE MARQUESS OF NORMANBY

I am sorry I am not in a position to answer the noble Lord's question.
