HL Deb 11 October 1944 vol 133 c498
LORD RUSHCLIFFE

My Lords, I beg to ask the other question standing in my name.

[The question was as follows:

To ask His Majesty's Government:

  1. (a) What was the total of Axis prisoners captured by the British Imperial Armies in Africa, excluding those captured in the battle for Tunisia;
  2. (b) What was the total of Axis prisoners captured by the Allies in the battle of Tunisia.]

LORD CROFT

The answer to the first part of the question is 265,600, and to the second part 252,300. But I would like to state that the figures given in reply to the first part of the noble Lord's question, dealing with operations in East Africa up to the Battle of Tunisia, do not include Italian native troops who were taken prisoner, and of whom there was also a very considerable number.

LORD RUSHCLIFFE

I am very much obliged to my noble friend for the most interesting information which he has given to the House.
