HL Deb 21 January 1930 vol 76 cc66-8

Minor Amendments.

Enactments to be amended. Amendment.
The Unemployment Insurance Act, 1920:
Section 5 Subsection (5) shall so far as it relates to persons of the age of sixty-five years or upwards, be deemed to have been repealed as from the second day of January, nineteen hundred and twenty-eight.
The Unemployment Insurance Act, 1922;
Section 14

LORD FAIRFAX OF CAMERON had given Notice to move, in the reference to Section 5 of the Unemployment Insurance Act, 1920, to leave out all words after "be" and to insert "repeal." The noble Lord said: As one or two noble Lords who were going to speak on this Amendment have had to leave owing to the lateness of the hour I desire to state that I will not move this Amendment now, but will do so on the Report stage.

LORD ARNOLD moved to include in the reference to the Unemployment Insurance Act, 1922:—

"Section 1 In the proviso to subsection (1) after the word 'having' there shall be inserted the words or assisting in'"

The noble Lord said: This is consequential to the provisions of Clause 2, which enables the dependants' allowance of 9s. to be paid to a new class, non-resident housekeepers. The present Bill proposes to add a new class of non-resident housekeepers. In this connection it is necessary to make the proviso fit the case of such non-resident housekeepers. There is really no controversy.

Amendment moved— Page 17, line 3, at end insert the said words.—(Lord Arnold.)

On Question, Amendment agreed to.

Second Schedule, as amended, agreed to.

Third Schedule [Enactments Repealed]:

LORD ARNOLD

I have a drafting Amendment to this Schedule. I beg to move.

Amendment moved— Page 18, line 21, in the first column, leave out ("30") and insert ("15").(Lord Arnold.)

LORD COZENS-HARDY

I have looked up the reference as corrected and I find there are no such words as "or the fourth," as stated in the third column. I ask the noble Lord in charge of the Bill to try again.

LORD ARNOLD

I will promise the noble Lord that I will look into this between now and Report stage. I have just glanced at it and I do not think anything is necessary to be done, but I will look into it.

On Question, Amendment agreed to.

Third Schedule, as amended, agreed to.

House resumed.

THE MARQUESS OF SALISBURY

May I ask when the Government propose to take the Report stage of this Bill?

LORD PARMOOR

We are putting it down for Thursday. It is very important. Of course if the noble Marquess has any objection to that we will consider it, but it is important that we should go on with the Bill for financial reasons.

THE MARQUESS OF SALISBURY

If the noble and learned Lord puts it to me, I am not going to resist it although the time is very short. We will do the best we can.

House adjourned at twenty minutes before eight o'clock.
