HL Deb 28 June 1922 vol 51 c94
LORD BRAYE

My Lords, I desire to ask, in reference to the indignities recently offered to Cardinal Logue, Archbishop of Armagh, who was taken from his ear and held up with revolver and rifle, what correspondence, if any, has passed between His Majesty's and the Ulster Governments as to this occurrence; and whether His Majesty's Government contemplate expressing regret, through our accredited envoy at the Vatican to the Holy See, that such an outrage has been made on an octogenarian Prince of the Church.

THE EARL OF CRAWFORD

My Lords, I have to inform noble Lords that no official correspondence has passed between His Majesty's Government and the Government of Northern Ireland on the subject to which Lord Braye refers. The question was discussed briefly with the Prime Minister of Northern Ireland, on the occasion of his recent visit to this country, and assurances have subsequently been received from the Secretary to the Lister Cabinet that effective steps are being taken to prevent any further act of discourtesy to His Eminence. The reply to the last part of the Question is in the negative, the Prime Minister of Northern Ireland having already expressed his regret, in which the King's Government concurs, that anything in the nature of inconvenience or discourtesy should have been experienced by the Cardinal and the prelate who was travelling with him on the occasion under review.
