HL Deb 24 November 1920 vol 42 cc627-8
THE CHANCELLOR OF THE DUCHY OF LANCASTER (THE EARL OF CRAW-FORD)

My Lords, I have had conversations with a number of noble Lords who are much interested in the Agriculture Bill. It is unlikely that the measure will reach this House until tomorrow, and it will probably therefore be difficult, if not impossible, to get the Second Reading of that Bill on Wednesday next, as had been hoped. It is therefore suggested that on Tuesday next, the 30th, my noble friend Lord Lee should begin the stage of the Second Reading, and that should Lord Lincolnshire so desire after the speech moving the rejection the debate should be adjourned till the following Tuesday—namely December 7—and the debate on the Bill be concluded on the next day, Wednesday the 8th. We should therefore begin on Tuesday by the speech of my noble friend Lord Lee, the debate being resumed on December 7 and concluded on the 8th. If that be so, I should hope that the House could begin to take the Committee stage of the Home Rule Bill on Wednesday of next week, and continue it on Thursday and on Monday, December 6. I hope that it will not be necessary for your Lordships to continue the Home Rule Bill on Friday the 3rd.

THE EARL OF MIDLETON

The noble Earl, I think, made a mistake of a day. He spoke originally of having Lord Lee's speech on Wednesday. Did he not mean Tuesday?

THE EARL OF CRAWFORD

It is Tuesday—Tuesday the 30th.

THE EARL OF MIDLETON

Otherwise the Committee stage of the Home Rule Bill, if it should get into Committee, would only come as second Order, if you had taken the speech of Lord Lee first

House adjourned at half-past twelve o'clock midnight.
