HL Deb 10 June 1920 vol 40 c576

Order of the Day for the Second Reading read.

THE EARL OF ONSLOW

My Lords, the object of this Bill is to give the Receiver of Metropolitan Police power to acquire compulsorily under the Land Clauses Act certain premises adjoining the workshop of the Wapping police station. The workshop is used for repairing craft belonging to the River Police, but it has become inadequate. The Receiver has been in communication with the owners of the wharf. They are the Governors of the Brighton Royal Hospital, who have no power under their Trust to dispose of their premises, although they have no objection; therefore, it is necessary to resort to compulsory powers. The occupiers, also, are agreeable to surrender their lease. The procedure for compulsory acquisition is the normal one adopted in all such cases, especially provided for in the Metropolitan Police Act, and it will enable all questions of compensation to be settled in accordance with the provisions of the Land Clauses Act.

Moved, That the Bill be now read 2a.—(The Earl of Onslow.)

On Question, Bill read 2a, and committed.
