LORD SAYE AND SELEMy Lords, I beg to ask His Majesty's Government whether, in view of the urgency of the question and of the long delay already experienced in connection with it, they will say when the Bill dealing with school attendance foreshadowed by the First Commissioner of His Majesty's Works in the debate on May 4 will be introduced.
§ THE FIRST COMMISSIONER OF WORKS (EARL BEAUCHAMP)My Lords, it would be obviously inconvenient for any Bill to proceed in this House concurrently with another Bill on the same subject in another place. The Bill is already in draft and the President of the Board of Education hopes to introduce it into the House of Commons the week after next. The Government consider it more convenient that the Bill should be brought in in that House, and this is more in accordance with the usual procedure as the President of the Board of Education is a member of the House of Commons. I hope the noble Lord will be satisfied with the assurance that the President of the Board of Education intends that this Bill shall have a speedy introduction.
