HL Deb 19 February 1891 vol 350 c1009
٭ THE EARL OF MORLEY

My Lords, I beg leave to present a Report from the Committee of Selection appointed for Standing Committees, and I shall not do so in absolute silence for this reason: that the Committee of Selection have not pursued precisely the same course as was followed last year. In accordance with the apparent wish of the House they have this year only appointed one Committee, but they wish it to be distinctly understood that the 72 noble Lords who are placed on that Committee are only to be appointed for a time, probably till Easter, the object being to appoint noble Lords only who are likely to attend up to that period After Easter it will probably be necessary to re-constitute the Committee or to appoint again the two Committees, as was the case last year. But I was anxious that it should be distinctly understood by noble Lords who are not placed on this Committee now, that if they desire to be placed thereon, according to the new Standing Orders, there will be no difficulty in the Committee of Selection placing them on it.
