HL Deb 28 March 1884 vol 286 cc986-7
EARL GRANVILLE

My Lords, it is with deep concern that I have to announce to your Lordships that Her Majesty the Queen has lost her youngest Son, the Duke of Albany, by death, at Cannes. I do not propose to move the adjournment of the House, for in these matters it is better not to yield to natural impulse, but to follow the precedents which have been set in both Houses of Parliament. I, therefore, wish to give Notice that on Monday I shall move an Address of Condolence to the Queen and the Duchess of Albany.

THE EARL OF CARNARVON

My Lords, in the absence of my noble Friend (the Marquess of Salisbury), I merely rise to say that which he would have said much bettor—namely, that it is with deep grief and consternation that we have heard this announcement. After what the noble Earl has said it would not be proper for me to add another word.
