HL Deb 12 May 1862 vol 166 c1556
THE EARL OF POWIS

wished to draw the attention of the Secretary of State for the Colonies to a notification in the London Gazette, from which it might be inferred that Colonial Bishops stood on a different footing from other Bishops, and that it was necessary for the new Bishop of Colombo, on his translation from the see of St. Helena, to be reconsecrated. As this was clearly an error, perhaps the noble Duke would see that it was corrected in a subsequent number of the Gazette.

THE DUKE OF NEWCASTLE

said, that the translation of a Colonial Bishop was very rare, and that the present was, perhaps, the first instance in which it had occurred. The error arose from the clerk having copied the ordinary form on appointing a new Colonial Bishop, when consecration was necessary.

THE EARL OF DERBY

would suggest that an explanation of the error should be inserted in the Gazette.

THE DUKE OF NEWCASTLE

said, he would take care that the correction should be published.

House adjourned at a quarter-past Eight O'clock, till To-morrow, half-past Ten o'clock.
