HC Deb 21 March 1938 vol 333 cc846-9
Mr. Attlee

(by Private Notice) asked the Prime Minister whether he has any statement to make on Government policy with respect to the international situation?

The Prime Minister

No, Sir. I must ask the right hon. Gentleman to be good enough to await the statement which I hope to make at an early date.

Mr. Attlee

Can the Prime Minister indicate when that date will be, in view of the widespread anxiety in this country and other countries and the wide divergence in the statement of policy made by his colleague?

The Prime Minister

I am not aware of any wide divergence such as the right hon. Gentleman suggests, and, in reply to the question of the right hon. Gentleman, the business has not yet been announced for Thursday, and it seems to me that that might be a suitable opportunity.

Mr. Attlee

Would the Prime Minister prefer to make it on Wednesday if the subject down for that day were altered, seeing that it is desirable to make that statement as soon as possible?

The Prime Minister

I think we had better keep to Thursday.

Mr. A. Henderson

May I ask the Prime Minister whether, in view of the fact that the speech of the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Labour has caused such misunderstandings in Europe, he will take steps to have the matter cleared up one way or the other?

The Prime Minister

It does not seem to me to arise out of this matter.

Mr. Attlee

Can the Prime Minister say how far it is intended to go in the event of the Motion to suspend the Eleven o'Clock Rule being carried?

The Prime Minister

The Motion on the Paper relates to the business of the House, and is to enable us to obtain the Report stage of the Air Estimates. The suspension of the Eleven o'Clock Rule is a precaution, and I do not anticipate that the House will be asked to sit late. If there is time before 11 o'clock, we propose to take the remaining stages of the Rating and Valuation (Postponement of Valuations) Bill, which is the second Order on the Paper to-day.

Motion made, and Question put, That this day, notwithstanding anything in Standing Order No. 14, the Report of the Air Supplementary Estimate, 1937, may be

considered, and Business other than the Business of Supply, may be taken before Eleven of the Clock, and that the Proceedings on the Report of Supply of 15th March may be taken after Eleven of the Clock, and that the Proceedings on Government Business be exempted, at this day's Sitting, from the provisions of the Standing Order (Sittings of the House)."—[The Prime Minister.]

The House divided: Ayes, 267; Noes, 96.
