HC Deb 27 July 1938 vol 338 cc3106-9
Mr. Attlee

May I ask the Prime Minister whether he can make a statement with regard to the resumption after the Recess.

The Prime Minister

The Government propose that the House shall reassemble after the Summer Recess on Tuesday, 1st November. It is expected that Parliament will be prorogued during that week and that His Majesty will open the new Session on Tuesday, 8th November.

The Motion for the Summer Adjournment which, as I have already announced, will be moved on Friday, will contain the usual provisions to empower Mr. Speaker, on representations being made by the Government, to call the House together at an earlier date, if such a course should appear necessary in the public interest.

Motion made, and Question put, That the Proceedings on Government Business be exempted, at this day's Sitting, from the provisions of the Standing Order (Sittings of the House)."—[The Prime Minister.]

The House divided: Ayes, 224; Noes, 118.
