HC Deb 12 November 1929 vol 231 cc1728-33
Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

May I ask the Prime Minister how far it is proposed to go to-night in the discussions on the Contributory Pensions Bill?

The PRIME MINISTER

I rather regret that a Motion to suspend the Eleven o'clock Rule has had to be put on the Order Paper to-day. I have no desire to keep the House sitting late, but the business has to be got through with reasonable expedition. I am there fore much less interested in how far we will get to-day if the House would suit the convenience of both sides. What I should like to do is to get the Committee stage of the Bill by the end of the Thursday Sitting of this week. That is necessary in order that the Bill may, on account of its benefits coming into operation get to another place at the latest by Monday night—the end of the Monday sitting. If the Committee will get to the end of Clause 15 to-night, it would enable that to be done. If hon. Members will look closely at the Order Paper, they will see that that is not impossible, although looking merely at the Paper and its area it seems rather a big piece of work. It is not big in substance. I am only too glad to accommodate both sides of the House if an accommodation is possible.

Mr. REMER

Does the Prime Minister anticipate that there will be a sitting of the House to-morrow?

The PRIME MINISTER

A good deal depends on the hon. Member himself.

Motion made, and Question put,

That the Proceedings on the Widows', Orphans', and Old Age Contributory Pensions Bill be exempted, at this day's Sitting, from the provisions of the Standing Order (Sittings of the House)."—[The Prime Minister.]
